Thank you to every single member of the NCCWR community who joined hands with us to make this year’s Deusi Bhailo Program a grand success. It has always been a challenge to match or surpass the success of this program each year, but we can confidently say that this year’s celebration lived up to expectations by equaling the quality and entertainment of last year’s event.
We would like to extend our gratitude to our beloved hosts and commend their dedication to celebrating our culture in this foreign land. Without our diligent and dedicated performers, the success of this program would have been unthinkable. We congratulate each of our star performers for their standout contributions and thank them for their continued commitment to the success of this event. We would also like to express our gratitude to the tireless volunteers in our community, whose hard work made this program a reality and a success, meeting the high expectations we had set.
We were delighted by the performances from the Deusi group led by Mr. Ram Gautam, the musical band led by Mr. Radheshyam Malakar (Rad), dance choirs including Sanisha, Sara, Nirvi, Satishma and Aarshi, impromptu acts by our student brothers and sisters, and a solo concert by seasoned community leader Mr. Prem Bhattachan.
Our volunteers and performers were welcomed with warm hospitality from our generous hosts, who provided delicious meals during the chilly Canadian autumn nights. We are deeply grateful to each of our hosts.

नेपालमा तिहारको पृष्ठभूमि
तिहार, जसलाई दीपावली पर्व पनि भनिन्छ, नेपालमा मनाइने प्रमुख र विशिष्ट चाडहरूमध्ये एक हो। यो चाड हरेक वर्ष कार्तिक महिनामा (अक्टोबर-नोभेम्बर) पाँच दिनसम्म मनाइन्छ। तिहारका हरेक दिन विशेष महत्व र पूजाको विधिहरूले भरिपूर्ण हुन्छ। यो चाड विभिन्न देवी-देवता, पशुपक्षी, र दाजुभाइ-बहिनीको विशेष सम्बन्धलाई सम्मान गरेर मनाइन्छ।
पहिलो दिन: काग तिहार
तिहारको पहिलो दिन काग तिहार हो, जहाँ कागलाई पूजा गरिन्छ। कागलाई सन्देशवाहक मानिन्छ, र यस दिन मानिसहरूले कागलाई अन्न, भात, र मिठाइ अर्पण गरेर सम्मान र कृतज्ञता व्यक्त गर्छन्।
दोस्रो दिन: कुकुर तिहार
दोस्रो दिन कुकुर तिहार हो, जसमा कुकुरहरूको वफादारी र सुरक्षाको प्रतीकका रूपमा पूजा गरिन्छ। मानिसहरूले कुकुरलाई माला, टीका, र मीठो परिकारहरू खुवाएर सम्मान गर्छन्।
तेस्रो दिन: गाई तिहार र लक्ष्मी पूजा
तेस्रो दिन तिहारको सबैभन्दा महत्वपूर्ण दिन हो। बिहान गाईको पूजा गरिन्छ, जसलाई सम्पत्ति र समृद्धिको प्रतीक मानिन्छ। साँझपख घर र व्यवसायमा लक्ष्मी पूजाको आयोजना गरिन्छ, जहाँ धन र सम्पत्तिकी देवी लक्ष्मीको पूजा गरिन्छ। दीप, बत्ती, र रंगोलीले सजाइएका घर-आँगनहरूले देवी लक्ष्मीलाई स्वागत गर्ने परम्परा रहेको छ।
चौथो दिन: गोवर्धन पूजा र म्ह पूजा
चौथो दिन गोवर्धन पूजा मनाइन्छ, जसमा बैललाई कृषि कार्यमा योगदानको प्रतीकका रूपमा पूजा गरिन्छ। नेवार समुदायले यस दिनलाई म्ह पूजा मनाउँछन्, जसमा आत्म-पूजा गरिन्छ, र आफैंप्रति सम्मान र आत्मशुद्धिको प्रतीक मानिन्छ।
पाँचौँ दिन: भाइटीका
पाँचौँ दिनलाई भाइटीका भनिन्छ, जहाँ दाजुभाइ र दिदीबहिनीबीचको विशेष सम्बन्धको पूजा गरिन्छ। यस दिन बहिनीहरूले दाजुभाइको निधारमा सप्तरंगी टीका लगाएर, फलफूल, मिठाइ, र उपहारहरू अर्पण गर्दै दीर्घायु र समृद्धिको कामना गर्दछन्। बदला स्वरूप, दाजुभाइहरूले पनि बहिनीहरूलाई उपहार दिन्छन्, जसले प्रेम र सुरक्षाको प्रतीक व्यक्त गर्दछ।
तिहार पर्व हर्ष, उज्यालो, र उत्सवको समय हो, जहाँ परिवार, पशु, र देवीदेवताहरूप्रति सम्मान व्यक्त गरिन्छ। यस पर्वले समाजमा कृतज्ञता, प्रेम, र सद्भावका मूल्यहरूलाई प्रोत्साहन दिन्छ।
Background of Tihar in Nepal
Tihar, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most significant and widely celebrated festivals in Nepal. It usually falls in the month of Kartik (October-November) and lasts for five days. The festival is dedicated to the worship of various deities, animals, and the special bond between brothers and sisters. Each day of Tihar has its unique significance and rituals.
Day 1: Kaag Tihar
The festival begins with Kaag Tihar, where crows (considered the messengers of death) are worshipped. People offer rice and sweets to the crows, symbolizing respect and gratitude towards these birds.
Day 2: Kukur Tihar
On the second day, Kukur Tihar, dogs are worshipped for their loyalty and protection. People offer garlands, tika, and delicious food to the dogs, acknowledging their important role in human life.
Day 3: Gai Tihar and Laxmi Puja
The third day is the most important day of Tihar. In the morning, cows are worshipped, as they are considered the symbol of wealth and prosperity. In the evening, people perform Laxmi Puja, worshipping Goddess Laxmi, the goddess of wealth and fortune. Homes and businesses are adorned with oil lamps, candles, and decorative patterns called rangoli to welcome the goddess.
Day 4: Govardhan Puja and Mha Puja
The fourth day is celebrated differently in various communities. For some, it is Govardhan Puja, where oxen are worshipped for their contribution to agriculture. For the Newar community, this day is celebrated as Mha Puja, the worship of oneself, symbolizing self-reflection and purification.
Day 5: Bhai Tika
The final day, Bhai Tika, marks the special bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters apply a seven-colored tika on their brothers’ foreheads and offer them fruits, sweets, and gifts, praying for their long life and prosperity. In return, brothers give their sisters gifts as a token of love and protection.
Tihar is a time for joy, lights, and celebrations, as people come together to honor relationships with family, animals, and deities. The festival promotes the values of gratitude, love, and harmony in society.
